Rainbow Trout ice fishing in Alberta

28 Alberta lakes on this site have rainbow trout on record, largest first. A lake without a record may still hold them: records come from provincial open data and our own research, and are not complete. Some records are stocking records, which show what a province has stocked, not everything in the lake.

General rainbow trout tips

Rainbow trout are often stocked and cruise shallow to mid-depth; small jigs, spoons or bait under a bobber will take them.

This is general guidance for the species, written by Ice Fish Canada, not a report from any one lake. Limits, size rules and closures vary by lake, so read the current Alberta regulations before you fish. Measure the ice yourself: see the ice thickness guidance.
